What is NaNoWriMo? And how is the Author Encounter celebrating this exciting event?

November 6, 2020

Yeah, Fall! Not so Hot days, pumpkin spice lattes, and… writing marathons? While it’s not the only event in the publishing world this november it is for quite a lot of new writers and aspiring authors the event that shapes their writing habits for the  year. Every November, writers all over the world sign up for NaNoWriMo and take the next step in their writing journey: writing a novel in just 30 days!

What is NaNoWrMo?

NaNowriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month, a simple challenge to write 50,000 words of a novel in thirty days.  It began in 1999 as a challenge between friends and grew into a non-profit supporting aspiring writers all year round in 2006. The main event is still the daunting month long challenge to get 50,000 thousand words on to the page during the month of november.

How does it work?

The rules are easy and mostly up to you to follow through on beginning on Midnight  November 1st, writers can start working on a new novel (or a fresh rewrite of an old one), the new novel or new draft must be 50,000 words by the end of the month. Planning and outlining can be done early before November or even after for those pantsers out there, but continuing a current work-in-progress is frowned upon by NaNoWriMo — though plenty of writers bend the rules for creative reason any way because this is self-challenge.

To win this November writing challenge, you’ll need to write 1,667 words or more per day. You can upload your word count daily or wait till you hit the 50,000 word count mark, to verify your novel on the Nanowrimo website. Winners are given banners and certificates to display if they choose, and winner’s T-shirts are available for purchase in the store.

But most importantly, you’ll have a brand-new draft of a novel, and the satisfaction of knowing that you rose to the challenge — which, for most writers, is the greatest reward of all.
